Posted Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by Chris Leggett
The Newburgh Free Academy wrestling team finished 25th as a team at the 8th annual Eatsren States Wrestling Tournament held at Sullivan County Community College.  The Goldbacks placed ahead of state ranked teams: #10 MacArthur (D1), #13 Union-Endicott (D1), #20 Queensbury (D1), #23 Warwick Valley (D1), #1 Pal-Mac (D2), #6 B-G-A (D2), #7 Holley (D2), #17 Hudson Falls (D2).  Reaching their first Eastern States Finals were Taylor Laraia(130) and Marcus Spearman(189).  Taylor, who placed 6th at last years' event, lost 7-3 to former state champ Bob Dierna of Wayne in what could be a preview of the 130 lb. state final.  Marcus, who placed 4th last year, lost to arch rival Mike McGrath of Kingston on a last second takedown, 3-1.  The two are certainly bound to meet several more times this season.  Marcus also received his 100th win when he pinned Kodi Floyd of Tioga in the 1st round.  John Carey(285) placed 8th, being the highest Section 9 placer at that weight class.  Also competing in the tournament were Johnny Bastone(103), who went 0-2; Bryan Cuilty(119), who went 1-2 and Mike Corlette(145), who went 0-2.
